What is Yoga

Sage Patanjali, who has penned this subject prior to 400 AD codified the yoga point of view, or yoga darshana, in his Yoga Sutras, which describes theory and practice of yoga. Yoga is defined as chitta vritti nirodha. Chitta is the consciousness which includes the mind, the intellect and the ego. Yoga is a method of silencing the vibrations of the chitta.

The eight aspects of yoga (Astanga pada) by Patanjali indicates the way to unite with your innermost Self.

What is Iyengar yoga?

Precision and alignment, use of props, sequencing and timings of the asana’s (yoga postures) are the unique characteristics of this yoga style. It is suited for improving your body posture and efficiency in movements. Refinement in the body alignment promotes the mechanical and organic functions of the body. It is a key for you to shift from unbalance to balance, from instability to stability, and from weakness to strength.

Iyengar yoga is accessible for everyone. No matter you are young or old, beginner or advanced, stiff or flexible, everyone can benefit from practicing yoga. If your mobility is limited, the postures are adapted to your needs, often using our props (yoga blankets, belts, bolsters, blocks etc.), so you can experience the benefit of the asana’s in the best way. Props are also used for advanced students in order to intensify their practice.

It is important to practice yoga with an appropriate sequence and timing according to your state of health. In Iyengar yoga different sequences have been developed for example for headache, hypertension, premenstrual syndrome, mental fatigue and so on.
