YOGA PHILOSOPHY
Discover how yoga is not only a practice but also a way of life.
In this inspiring class, we’ll explore the rich and timeless world of yoga philosophy. You’ll be introduced to the classical texts that form the foundation of the yoga tradition — the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gītā, and Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra.
We’ll look at the many paths of yoga, including bhakti yoga (the path of devotion) and jñāna yoga (the path of knowledge), and see how each offers its own way toward inner growth and awareness.
A special focus will be on Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras, where the essence of yoga is expressed in short, powerful verses. We’ll discuss the first three sutras, which address the key questions: What is yoga? What is its purpose? How can we find inner peace and clarity?
You’ll also learn about the eightfold path, the five Kleśas (including the ego), and the nine Antarayas (obstacles) that can appear along the way.
We’ll connect these ideas to our own Iyengar yoga tradition, which has its roots in the teachings of the influential yoga master T. Krishnamacharya. This helps you understand where our practice comes from and what makes it unique.
Finally, we’ll explore how to bring yoga philosophy into your āsana (posture) practice — and how to carry these insights into your daily life.
YOGA ANATOMY
Learn to apply anatomical principles to deepen your poses.
Sutra II.47 of Patanjali states: “Perfection in asana is achieved when effort becomes effortless”.
Understanding anatomy is key to achieving that effortlessness in yoga. It allows you to move with awareness, precision, and ease.
In this session, you’ll explore how bones and muscles work together to create alignment in asanas. This is not abstract theory—it’s functional, experiential anatomy. You'll learn how your body actually works, and how that feels in your own practice.
We begin with a brief introduction to basic anatomical concepts, including key terms, directional language, body planes, and types of movement. This foundation will help you understand and articulate what’s happening in the body during asana.
Next, we’ll focus on one joint—such as the hip joint—to apply these concepts in a concrete way. By examining the hip’s structure and range of motion, we’ll learn how to describe and observe movement with anatomical precision.
From there, we’ll translate this knowledge into yoga poses, analyzing how the joint functions in familiar asanas.
Finally, we’ll focus on refining the pose—exploring how alignment, progression and regression, stabilization, and breath awareness deepen your understanding and embodiment of each asana.
SELF PRACTICE
Find out how to develop a yoga routine and bring your practice to a whole new level.
Practicing yoga doesn’t stop when the class ends. In fact, it’s especially in the small moments of your day that you can carry the calm, focus, and connection from class with you.
By doing yoga at home occasionally, you create more space to feel what you need — physically, mentally, and emotionally. It can help you become stronger and more mindful in life.
In this class, we focus on how to bring what you learn in class home with you, and how to make yoga a natural part of your daily life.
We will discuss the effects of different postures and explore what you personally need. You’ll learn how to consciously use these effects to find your own balance.
To conclude, we will create your own yoga sequence together: a series of postures tailored to your body, needs, and life rhythm.
We will look at when in your day to best integrate this sequence — fitting it between your daily activities and aligning it with your energy, schedule, and condition.
This way, you grow towards a personal yoga practice that you look forward to every day.
