The word soma comes from Greek and means “living body.” In somatics, it refers to experiencing the body from within. Thomas Hanna introduced this term in 1976. According to Hanna, somatics is a form of movement education that is valuable in its own right: it helps develop healthy muscle tone in the body and prevents the holding of tension that can be tiring or painful—often without us even being aware of it. The movements are slow and gentle, often practiced on the floor, allowing the brain to keep track of what is happening in the muscles and movements.
Somatics can also be used to experience yoga postures in a new way—exactly what we will be doing during this workshop. We will practice somatic movements and then explore how this influences postures such as Mountain Pose (Tadasana), Triangle Pose (Utthita Trikonasana), and Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I).
Are you ready for a fresh, new experience of your yoga postures?
Then join this workshop on muscle magic!
Who can participate:
All students with a basic understanding of yoga poses are welcome.
About Cécile van den Boogaard
Cécile has been practicing yoga for over 12 years. Iyengar Yoga was her first love, drawn by the clarity, depth, and challenge it offers.
Somatic movement came later and taught her to enter and remain in postures with a more exploratory and curious state of mind. She learned to move more from within the body (engaged alignment) and to trust what the body already knows. The work of Vanda Scaravelli has been a major source of inspiration in this process.
The somatic teacher trainings she has completed are with Liliana Nuño and Lisa Petersen. In her teaching, Cécile remains attentive and observant, exploring how each person moves and where greater ease, enjoyment, and insight can emerge.
